Brecon is centrally positioned in the National Park and is a very popular base for walkers, mountain bikers and those who just enjoy being within the beautiful surrounding countryside with breathtaking views.

 

The cathedral town boasts two museums - The Welsh Borderer's Museum and the Brecon Cathedral along with a shop and cafe.

 

The bustling town centre is quaint with many individual shops and cafes. There is an annual world renowned Jazz Festival held in the town during August.

 

Recreational facilities include boating, tennis, a new leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool, various children's parks and two fine golf courses, one in town and at Cradoc 3 miles from Brecon town centre.

 

In the surrounding area there are many villages worth a visit

 

  • Merthyr Cynog, to the north from where you can walk the Brecon Beacons.
  • The National Park's Mountain Centre is at Libanus, exhibiting the natural history, geology and scenery in the area.
  • Trecastle, Sennybridge and Defynnog have lively village centres, with local pubs, numerous scenic walks and fishing on the Usk reservoir.
  • Trallong, Pentrefelin and Pentrebach are all small farming hamlets, peaceful and quiet. Beautiful Red kites regularly soar overhead .
  • The popular canalside villages of Talybont-on-Usk and Pencellihave easy access to many footpaths and The Taff Trail cycle route, and beyond Aber village are the Blaen Y Glyn waterfalls.
  • Llanfrynach and Cantref at the foot of the highest peaks of the Beacons offer direct access to the mountains, either on foot or pony trekking.
  • Llangorse village, an excellent base for all outdoor pursuits at the nearby climbing and pony trekking, just a few minutes walk from the largest natural lake in South Wales, popular for boating, canoeing as well as bird watching.
  • Erwood and Llyswen are set in the beautiful area along the River Wye with the waymarked Wye Valley Walk

 

Public transport

 

There are numerous bus sevices to Brecon, as well as the Beacons Bus which provides transport for Walkers and Cyclists in the whole of the National Park area.

 

The nearest train station is Abergavenny, 18 miles from Brecon.
