The owners live in the adjoining cottage, in the garden of which is the now dry St. Mary's well. According to local folklore, a spout of water miraculously rose from the well to douse the flames when the nearby church caught fire during construction. Cynics, sadly, put that legend down to the effect on the population of the very many public houses that existed in Hay at that time. The weathered stone effigy of Moll Walbee, wife of William de Braose the "Ogre of Abergavenny", made famous by Barbara Erskine's novel "The Lady of Hay", is to be found in the west end of the church. The site of the original Hay Castle, now just a well defined mound, is also close by.
