    Llangattock Escarpment

Some of Britain's longest cave systems lie concealed below this hillside. This cottage is very popular with cavers, walkers, mountain bikers, climbers and bird watchers alike. The Lonely Shepherd is an isolated limestone pinnacle still standing left by quarry workers who moved great quantities of the surrounding rock. The rock was removed by a series of tram roads and tramways which linked north via steep inclines to a wharf on the canal below. These tram routes are now grassy tracks for walkers. From the cottage there is an abundance of level or hilly choices for walking and cycling.

The road up to the cottage from Llangattock is very steep and winding passing over the Brecon Canal with extraordinary views.  There are alternative easier level access routes from the Heads of the Valley road (A465).

    Discover Crickhowell and Llangattock

The village of Llangattock itself is situated on the canal and also on the River Usk with two excellent pubs both offering good food. Crickhowell is just over the River Usk, across the ancient bridge, again with all the local amenities with shops, restaurants, pubs and an art gallery.

    Crickhowell 2 miles.
